Souvent l’origine du changement est externe à l’entreprise, l’environnement amenant les conditions requérant un changement de l’entreprise pour rester compétitive. Ruptures technologiques, nouvelles réglementations, nouvelles conditions économiques, le changement est rarement endogène.
